“To the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts.” (Zachariah 8:19)
There are one hundred and twenty-four musical references in the Psalms. Only six of these suggest “solemn singing”, while over seventy times the terms “joy”, “cheerful”, “happy”, and “glad”, are used! So what excuse is there for gloomy Christians?
A Christian had become greatly discouraged and had decided to return to the pleasures of the world. While in such a state of mind he started on a journey and stopped at a certain hotel for the night. The following morning he heard someone in the next room whistling cheerfully the tune of “Stand up, stand up for Jesus.” He did not know who the happy Christian was, but he got the message, was admonished in his soul, and decided to return to the Lord with all his heart.
Keep singing, beloved! You will be blessed in your own soul and the blessing will surely overflow to others.
Then let our songs abound,
We’re marching through Emmanuel’s ground,
Yours in the Lord’s Vineyard (James E. Dojeh).
